John is a native of West Virginia. He was born in May of 1966. After serving on active duty with the United States Army as a Combat Engineer, West Virginia requested that he find a more suitable place to reside.  He found that the Ozarks were much like home and headed west.

The State of Missouri allows him to practice law. However it requests that he limit his practice to times when there is an adult around to supervise. In an extraordinary act of misjudgment, Dan and Steve saw fit to get him admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. He has been unable to shanghai any other Court into admitting him.

John took several classes at a university. Having no earthly idea what he wanted, he settled on philosophy. Marshall University gave him the heave-ho in 1996 and conferred a B.A. degree to insure he would have no excuse for returning. You may recognize Marshall as the Thundering Herd, the Division II football champions who trounced Missouri University in 1995. Always being one for the underdog, John headed to Missouri for law school.

He attended Washington University. It is still rumored he received his letter of admission by mistake.  Once there, the administration had to find a way to limit the time he would be in class and disrupt the other students. They decided to keep him occupied by making him an associate editor for the Washington University Law Quarterly.

The senior members of the firm have adopted a similar strategy for keeping John out of the office and away from the paying clients. They encourage his attendance at meetings of the Butler County Bar Association and work on the SEMOLS Board of Directors. Dan and Steve always look forward to the two weeks during the summer when John is fulfilling his commitment to the Missouri National Guard JAG Corps.

Amy is charged with the duty of keeping John out of the office. She started her career as a legal secretary with the firm in 1997 and has questioned the decision frequently since.
